USELESS THOUGHTS

Neo Comics: A Pinoy Manga

October 31, 2006 · 53 Comments

neocomic

I decided to purchase this neo-comics from my fave bookstore since no new PC, Gadget Mags available. This comic is just similar to japanese mangas coz of their anime-ish style but not quite good if you compare it to japanese mangas, but I admit it, the illustrations are still good. I can’t believe that the pinoys actually did this considering the lousy comics they had long time ago.
There are 2 available selections of mangas, Epics and FABLES. The mangas contain 5 original stories. The Epics contains Rivals, Cross: The Stray, Twin Angels, Alay, Inordi. While, the FABLES contains Sweet Serenity, Threads, Coda Academy, Pandora’s Box, Cursed Melody.
From now on, I’ll buy every new issue on this manga. btw, it’s in english version, not in tagalog(I don’t fully understand tagalog anyway).

lol love it. it has a lot of potential. and the artists are doing their best to improve their work, hence the changing artstyles. i think some of the artists are not yet sure which artstyles are suitable for their stories. let’s give them time to feel comfortable with their style so they could actually start keeping their work consistent. by then, they can fully concentrate on improving rather than experimenting.

ps not all pinoy comics are lame! culture crash was awesome and off the hook! too bad it was discontinued though… T_T

you know what you might think it’s really good, well it’s really good!
because filipinos are creative in pirating different works of art and they only
put a little blend in it and they’ll call it sariling atin! it really sucks to think about…….
we could not blame it to ourselves cos we are born that way and you know you wont disagree with me………

  • samejima // January 24, 2007 at 6:52 am | Reply

hahahaha… absolutely right Slerner… Filipnos don’t have “ORIGINALITY”, to be blunt. Others won’t agree with it… that’s our opinions anyway. They do not need to get mad at us… we have the freedom to speak our minds here… someone’s been very angry at me saying the old comics sucked! hahah

Filipinos are very creative but they have two problems when it comes to the creative industry.

1.) Marketing – It may be a good idea or even a very revolutionary idea but thats not the end of it. Is it marketable or how can it be marketble.

2.) Cultural Respect – Filipnos do not respect the culture of other nations because they do not respect their own true culture. That’s why when we create stuff it is either of two things. First, they are just rip offs from other foreign creations calling it a local version of such creation. Second, we use a foreign modes of expression like American comics or anime without fully understanding how to use it. We just use the art style and call it anime because it will sell.

    How to create Pinoy Manga/Anime?

*There is no such thing as Pinoy Manga or Anime. But we can use Anime and Manga as tools to study real Filipino issues and culture.

    STEP 1: Turn Japanese
For a moment, forget that you are even Filipino. Be Japanese. Be exposed to anime and manga. Be familiar with the art styles like shoujo and shonen. Be familiar with the issues or topics discussed in anime and manga. Be familiar with level of depth found in anime and manga. Be mindful of Japanese customs, language and culture. Be mindful about the industry and how it spreads globally. Be mindful of who is who in the industry.

    STEP 2: Reach out
Anime is a Japanese mode of expression but it doesn’t mean it will just stay in Japan. Anime is an international phenomenon because it tries to reach out to other cultures and express whatever is in that culture. It studies and dissects these cultures using the same tools used in anime. After turning Japanese, how can you study and express Filipino culture and real Filipino issues using the tools of anime. Since you are Filpino and you have lived in the Philippines for all your life, I think it will be easy to navigate using the tools of anime.

    Step 3: Repeat steps 1 and 2
There is going to be plenty of room for improvement for the anime industry and Filipino art.

    STEP 1: Turn Japanese (Additional)
Also, before I forget it completely, be mindful of how anime deals with issues and navigates through a culture.

  • Zephydel // April 6, 2007 at 1:48 pm | Reply

That’s right we should be proud of who we are and we should revive our ancient culture.

Honestly… our so called colonial culture is garbage. I have no love for it.

The Spaniards erased our culture and replaced it with a culture meant to control us.

To make it worse, they used religion or “divine right”as a reason to ruin our great nation…. even up to this very day.

Speaking of Culture Crash….. I think the best manga you’ll ever find there is “Pasig” by tabing ilog.

Very creative. Well thought of. It really touches real Filipino issues with none of that “Paawa Effect,” garbage you see in Bakekang or whatever the hell is being made in here.

Filipinos kick ass because they can and not because they are compelled by their situations.

  • Zephydel // April 6, 2007 at 1:54 pm | Reply

Fiipinos should realize that we are no longer victims here and we do not need anybody’s sympathy.

well just want to make a comment about the comics layout ?? cause the storys are just to short per book so is kinda like pretty boring to read cause you cant understand the story completly well just want to say that can you minimize your books to 3 storys per book w/ minimum of 18 pages per story so its not going to be boring to read cause of the short story stuffs ?? but all in all your book is great TY !!

Zephydel, you’re right. I myself dream of a post-colonial Philippines. I even hate the fact that we still retain the name given to us by the Spanish colonizers.

Most Philippine works have no identity. I believe comics/anime/manga/whatever, when read by an outsider, should feel “he’s in the Philippines.”

That’s how it is in the global village. Cultural exchange.

Does the Philippines transmit anything it indigenously has to the global village?

Not quite. Just a few perhaps, but still, the neo-colonial ones are still flocking like hell.

Hmm…actually dapat di muna tayo mag focus sa pagcolor, just like Japanese comics, black and white sila..and kailangan dagdag pa sa depth ng story, medyo babaw kasi…or why don’t we try to illustrate Filipino novels into comics (e.g. Noli or El Fili hehe)…kasi napapansin ko mas magiging interesting un rather reading it with purely text and at the same time love of country hehehehehe… and no offense, medyo di pulido ang drawing, practice pa siguro heheheh

I just happen to stumble upon this blog while looking for articles about Filipino Komiks and Pinoy manga for my research paper and I have read all the Comments to this article. I myself am an aspiring mangaka. Influenced by anime and the Japanese culture, I fell in love with the simplicity of the art and how easy it is to look at. But as a proud Filipino artist, I have a dream for my country- to share our rich culture through this very famous medium which we call komiks.

For 300 years we were colonized by the Spanish that is why most of our so called “traditions” are influenced by Spanish colonialism. I am not siding with any country here. In terms of religion, the Spanish missionaries have good intentions to our people. They merely want to evangelize us. Even King Philip of Spain had good intentions for our country and to our people; the only thing is that all the corrupt and horrid Spanish officials were sent to our country creating a bloody history in our country. They weren’t all bad we were just unlucky at that time. And besides, think about it, if the Spanish hadn’t colonized us, great works as the Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo wouldn’t be written. And besides, it was during their time that the first Flipino comic book was written.

And I think we have a problem on preserving of what is left to our original culture compared to other countries due to the humid condition of our country, a lot of written documents are easily destroyed as well as other evidences. That is why most of our traditions were given verbally.

So what is my point writing such a comment? We shouldn’t blame our conquerors. We would not be what we are today if it were not for them. Foreigners love Filipinos because they are very flexible people. They say that we are really good in accepting foreign cultures and learning new languages. They have a good mind set towards the Filipino people.

My only wish is that for Filipinos to have the same pride and love for our country that is the same as to our ancestors. We should also have an open mind for other culture; learn from it and use it for our country’s growth.

Basta sa tingin ko perfect ang Pilipino. Dapat niya lang matutunan kung paano mahalin ang sarili niyang bayan sa isip, sa salita at sa gawa.

.my collection na ako ng neo fable.. binili ko kaagad dahil nainspired talaga nung nalaman kong pilipino gumawa non.and the drawings were really great.. kaso parang pansin ko
sa ilang mga panels (mostly) hindi masyadong binibigyan ng effort ung mga background. (honestly, Im disappointed) .

I know Im not that good at drawing, but Im good at observing.at tumingin ng tama at may mali. hindi nmn sa mali pero feeling ko kasi
hindi maaapreciate ng iba ung drawing kung nakatuon lang sa mga main characters ang effort.

and Im I agree with Kaito_ace’s suggestion.
